What is Hyundai P0335?
P0335 means the ECM has detected no signal or an erratic signal from the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor. The CKP sensor tells the ECM the exact position and speed of the crankshaft — without this signal, the ECM cannot fire the spark plugs or injectors at the correct time. On Hyundai vehicles (i10, i20, Grand i10, Creta, Verna, Tucson), a failed CKP sensor causes the engine to crank without starting, stall at speed, or run rough. The sensor itself is inexpensive but the diagnosis is critical — wiring faults are equally common.
Symptoms of P0335 on Hyundai
Engine cranks normally but will not fire — the most common presentation of P0335 on Hyundai.
Engine cuts out without warning at any speed — dangerous in traffic.
Intermittent CKP signal causes random misfires and rough idle when signal is partially present.
Spark plugs will not fire without CKP signal — check for spark as first diagnostic step.
Common Causes of P0335
| Cause | Probability | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Failed CKP sensor | Very High | Sensor element failure common above 80,000 km, especially on petrol Hyundai engines |
| Damaged CKP sensor wiring | High | Wiring runs near hot exhaust — heat damage cracks insulation over time |
| Reluctor ring damage | Medium | Bent or missing teeth on crankshaft reluctor ring cause erratic signal |
| CKP sensor air gap too large | Medium | Sensor mounting loosens causing gap to exceed specification |
| ECM input circuit fault | Low | ECM CKP circuit fault — diagnose only after sensor and wiring are confirmed good |
Diagnosis & Repair Steps
With engine cranking, check if spark plugs fire. No spark alongside P0335 confirms CKP signal loss.
Locate sensor (usually on engine block near crankshaft pulley). Check for physical damage, cracked housing or oil contamination.
Inspect connector for corroded pins or spread contacts. Trace wiring for heat damage or chafing.
Disconnect sensor and measure resistance across signal pins — should match manufacturer specification (typically 200–900 ohms).
Inspect crankshaft reluctor ring for bent, cracked or missing teeth — use inspection mirror or borescope.
CKP sensors are relatively inexpensive. If wiring and reluctor ring check out, replace the sensor with a genuine Hyundai or equivalent part.
