What is Mahindra P0191?
P0191 is triggered when the ECM detects that the fuel rail pressure sensor is reading a value outside its normal operating range. On Mahindra diesel engines, the high-pressure common rail system runs at 1,400–1,800 bar. If the sensor reports incorrect pressure, the ECM cannot control fuel injection accurately, causing misfires, poor power, and potential injector damage.
Symptoms of P0191 on Mahindra
Amber MIL on dashboard is the first visible sign.
Engine cranks longer than normal before firing, especially cold starts.
ECM restricts power to protect injectors when pressure data is unreliable.
Uneven engine note at idle — ECM using default fuel tables instead of live data.
Inaccurate pressure readings cause over- or under-fuelling.
Over-fuelling from bad sensor data causes black exhaust smoke.
What Causes P0191 on Mahindra?
The fuel rail pressure sensor itself is degraded or failed — most common cause.
Corroded or damaged connector pins at the sensor give intermittent readings.
Water or debris in fuel damages the sensor membrane over time.
Rare — ECM input circuit fault. Confirmed by substituting a known-good sensor.
