Maruti P0171 — System Too Lean (Bank 1)

Very common on Maruti petrol engines. Too much air or too little fuel in the mixture — causes rough idle, poor economy and if ignored, engine damage.

What It Means

What is Maruti P0171?

ℹ️

P0171 means the ECM has detected that the air-fuel mixture is running lean on Bank 1 — there is too much air relative to fuel. The ECM adds more fuel to compensate (positive fuel trim), but eventually runs out of correction range and sets P0171. On Maruti petrol vehicles (K10, K12, K15 engines), the most common causes are vacuum leaks around the intake manifold, a dirty MAF sensor, or a weak fuel pump. Running lean long-term causes overheating, engine knock, and catalytic converter damage.

Warning Signs

Symptoms of P0171 on Maruti

🔄
Rough / Hunting Idle

Engine idle is unstable, especially on cold start — classic lean condition symptom.

⬇️
Poor Fuel Economy

Ironically, a lean fault often causes worse economy as the ECM keeps trying to add more fuel.

💥
Engine Ping/Knock

Lean mixture causes detonation under load — listen for metallic knocking sound.

🌡️
High Engine Temperature

Lean combustion burns hotter, causing coolant temperature to rise above normal.

Root Causes

Common Causes of P0171

CauseProbabilityNotes
Vacuum leakVery HighCracked intake manifold gasket or split vacuum hose — most common cause on 5+ year old Maruti engines
Dirty MAF sensorHighContaminated MAF under-reads airflow, causing ECM to under-fuel
Faulty or leaking fuel injectorsHighPartially blocked injectors reduce fuel delivery — common above 80,000 km
Weak fuel pumpMediumPump pressure below 2.8 bar causes lean condition at high load
Faulty oxygen sensorMediumLazy O2 sensor can cause ECM to run lean based on incorrect feedback
Air filter housing leakLowCracked air box or loose connection allows unmetered air into engine
How to Fix

Diagnosis & Repair Steps

1
Read fuel trim data

Check short-term and long-term fuel trim. LTFT above +15% confirms lean condition. Note which load conditions worsen it.

2
Check for vacuum leaks

Inspect intake manifold gasket, PCV hose, brake booster hose and all vacuum lines. Use smoke test or carb cleaner method.

3
Clean MAF sensor

Use MAF cleaner spray on the sensor element. Retest fuel trim after cleaning.

4
Check fuel pressure

Measure fuel rail pressure at idle and under load. Below 2.8 bar at idle indicates weak fuel pump.

5
Test fuel injectors

Check injector spray pattern and flow using injector test kit or send for ultrasonic cleaning.

6
Check oxygen sensor response

Monitor O2 sensor switching on scanner — should switch between 0.1V and 0.9V rapidly. A slow or fixed sensor is faulty.
