What It Means

What is Tata P0191?

ℹ️

P0191 means the ECM has detected that the fuel rail pressure sensor signal is out of expected range or is erratic. Unlike P0087 (which is a genuine low pressure condition), P0191 is typically a sensor or wiring fault rather than an actual fuel pressure problem. On Tata common rail diesel engines, this sensor is critical — without accurate rail pressure data, the ECM cannot control injection timing and quantity precisely, leading to rough running and starting problems.

Warning Signs

Symptoms of P0191 on Tata

🔑
Hard Starting

Engine takes long to start or requires multiple cranking attempts, especially cold.

🔄
Rough Idle

Engine hunts or vibrates at idle due to inconsistent injection quantities.

💥
Misfires Under Load

Sudden power cuts or stumbles during acceleration, especially uphill.

⚠️
Limp Mode

ECM may enter reduced power mode to protect injectors from over-fuelling.

Root Causes

Common Causes of P0191

CauseProbabilityNotes
Faulty fuel rail pressure sensorVery HighSensor drift or internal failure — very common on high-mileage Tata engines
Corroded sensor connectorHighWater ingress into connector plug causes intermittent signal loss
Damaged sensor wiringHighChafed or broken wire between sensor and ECM
Actual low fuel pressureMediumIf fuel pump is also weak, both P0191 and P0087 may be set together
ECM internal faultLowRare — only diagnose after all other causes are ruled out
How to Fix

Diagnosis & Repair Steps

1
Scan and record all fault codes

Note if P0087 is also present — both codes together suggest actual low pressure rather than just a sensor fault.

2
Inspect sensor connector

Check connector for corrosion, bent pins or water ingress. Clean and apply dielectric grease.

3
Check wiring continuity

Test signal, supply and ground wires from sensor back to ECM for breaks or shorts.

4
Test sensor live data

With engine running, monitor rail pressure reading. Should be 250–300 bar at idle, rising to 1600+ bar under load.

5
Cross-reference with pressure gauge

Connect a mechanical fuel pressure gauge to verify actual vs sensor-reported pressure.

6
Replace sensor if faulty

If readings are erratic or out of range, replace the fuel rail pressure sensor. Use genuine or Bosch sensor for best results.
